The Organ Restoration Project Over the past 20 years, the organ has seen a steady deterioration in its pneumatic control and leatherwork to the point where the pedal reeds no longer function and the control action is unreliable. Had it not been for a fire in the mid 1970s at the rear of the console, it is almost certain that the instrument would no longer function. In March 2002, the world celebrity concert organist, Robert Munns (of Eastbourne), paid a social visit to Dr Colin H Parsons in Lancaster and during this visit, played the Town Hall organ. It was during this time that the possibility of restoration, funding etc. were discussed and the project was launched. Earlier attempts had been made be several interested parties, but have come to no avail. The Ashton Hall Restoration Project was quickly established, patrons were sought, and a management team was constituted. Local solicitors and accountants readily agreed to donate their services. In August 2004, a constitution will be drawn up, and an application for charity status will be submitted. To date, there have been lunchtime organ concerts by local organists, and these have attracted audiences of around 30. In May 2004, the first major fundraising event was held and took the form of a combined Come & Sing day and Last Night of the Proms concert. This attracted approximately 450 participants and audience. The event was attended by His Worship the Mayor of Lancaster and the Lady Mayoress. Several councillors from Lancaster City Council also attended. To read more, see the pictures, and hear extracts from this event, click here.
